Assistive Technology

I found the Assistive Technology assignment to be very informative. I have previously seen most of the computer settings that were covered in this assignment but honestly was not completely aware of how they worked or for what purpose. The assistance tools that are provided would be a big help to an array of students with different disabilities. The tools that are built into Windows provide help to students with visual and audio disabilities, as well as physical disabilities. Changing the display settings in Windows to a high contrast theme would assist a student that can not read low contrast text very well. The display settings also allow the students to zoom into the screen to help out text and image visibility. Some of the audio settings that can be changed to notify the student or teacher of when a particular key is entered in attempt to avoid that key from accidentally being used. The on-screen keyboard option would assist any students that may have difficulty using a traditional keyboard due to some form of disability. I am happy that so many tools and resources are now available to a wide variety of students that were not present while I was in elementary school.

Final Reflection: IT365

I was unsure of what I would take away from this class when it first began. I consider myself to be pretty proficient with a lot of the current technology that is regularly available and did not know if I would be learning anything new. While I was very familiar with most of the tools that we would be using during the class I realized that I had never really considered how these tools could be used in a classroom environment. I have previously created websites for myself, created home movies, and have kept a blog or two since I was a teenager. All of the previous experience with these tools was more about serving myself.  I had used these types of tools in a way that was more personal and not directly for anyone outside of my friends or my family. Even though I had used these tools often and knew that I would eventually become a teacher I never thought about how I could apply my knowledge of technological tools in my class. I feel that technology is the greatest tool we currently have as educators if used correctly. There are endless things that you can accomplish with the aid of technology in your classroom. Technology not only provides the teacher and student with tools but it also provides a means of communication. The tools that are now available can connect students and teachers with other students and teachers all over the world. Information can be shared more easily and quicker than ever before. We are no longer limited by geography. One student can talk to another student or share a project all of the way on the other side of the world with only the push of a couple of buttons. This was not really a possibility when I was in elementary school. The technology to talk to others on the other side of the world was already around but it was not really available to normal individuals as the cost of technology like this was outside the reach of working class families. I think one of the greatest achievements in the advancement of technology is that it is now accessible to most people. Someone that may not be able to afford a computer can still go to a public library to use email and communicate with someone far away. Free tools like Blogger, Google Docs, and others, provide more tools to effectively communicate.

Social, Ethical, and Legal Issues (Turnitin)

  1. Turnitin, www.turnitin.com, is a web-based service that is used to check for plagiarism and originality. The service is used and trusted by millions of students, faculty, and thousands of institutions all over the world. Turnitin encourages the best practices for using and citing other people's written material.
Turnitin is a great tool to use to ensure that the works submitted are original. It would have been a lot easier to plagiarize written works prior to Turnitin(and other similar services) being available as there was no database of documents readily available to make any comparison. I remember being in high school and it not being totally uncommon for students to turn in research papers they had acquired from another student that may have turned it in years prior. This type of plagiarism was hard to battle as it would be very difficult for any teacher to be able to keep track of all of the papers that have been submitted over the years. It would be even more unlikely for the teacher to recognize the submission as being plagiarized if the initial paper had been completed for another teacher. Turnitin maintains the database of documents and essentially does all of the work for the teacher in this respect.

Google Groups

I really enjoyed the collaborative aspect of the Google Groups assignment. I think both students, parents, and instructors can all appreciate that the collaboration is not limited to only the physical classroom. The students can begin their group project in class by planning out what they would like to do. They can start on the project together and then finish their part of the assignment at home if needed. The students are able to collaborate outside of the classroom though the they would be working at home without the physical presence of their classmates. This also allows the students an opportunity to think about the project and work on it in an environment that may be less stressful for them. Some students do not work well under the pressure of their peers. Being able to work on the group project in the comfort of their own home would provide them an opportunity to slow down and think about the project more.  I would have personally loved the opportunity to work like this more when I was in elementary school. I feel that Google Groups would be extremely useful in a classroom setting and can definitely see myself using this with my students.

Kelsey Pie Goes to The Dentist!
Once upon a time in a far away land, there lived a fairy princess named Kelsey Pie! She was the spunkiest, and most daring fairy princess in alllllll the land. But, Kelsey Pie had one little problem….. she was ADDICTED to CHOCOLATE!!!! Kelsey Pie would rummage through all the kitchen cabinets, the secret stash in her daddy’s room, and even Mrs. Bubblebutt’s cookie jar! One day, Kelsey Pie’s mommy said, “Kelsey, brush your teeth, and floss reallllly good. You are going to the dentist today baby girl”. Kelsey screamed, “NOOOOOOO!!”. Kelsey Pie ran to her daddy and begged not to go. But, mommy said she had to go. Kelsey Pie was so scared of the dentist. The worst part of all, was that this dentist was the meanest and nastiest dentist in the whole world! His name was Dr. Payne. Even worse, he is a big, scary, and hairy TROLL! (Sarah)

Dr. Payne’s office was not what you would expect. The dentist’s chair was made from the back seat of a 1973 Ford Pinto and the upholstery was torn with it’s rusted springs exposed. A tetanus shot is required before having any procedures completed with this big, scary, hairy, troll of a doctor. Dr. Payne uses dirty ditch-water and silt from a local quarry to clean and prepare his patient’s teeth. When Dr. Payne is done with cleaning the teeth he will often use a mixture of pureed Sour Patch Kids and rubbing alcohol to polish them to a shimmering, sugary, painful, shine. The reason Dr. Payne did this was to ensure that his patients would always come back for more dental work. Dr. Payne was lonely and had no friends with the exception of the algae that grew along the walls under the bridge where he lived. Dr. Payne wanted other friends that weren’t eukaryotic organisms. (Danin)

It was early one Monday morning when Kelsey’s dad brought her to meet Dr. Payne. All the things that everyone had told her had came to be true about him. He was an ugly troll who stood about 7 feet tall and weighed over three-hundred pounds with hair all over his body. Kelsey looked around his office at all the needles and mixtures that he had brewing just for her and started to scream, “NOOOOO daddy please don’t make me do this” loud enough that everyone on that side of the community could hear. She promised her dad that she would never sneak in the cabinets to eat chocolate ever again. It was too late for the screaming because Dr. Payne was ready to begin the procedure on her. Just as he was mixing his dirty ditch water to start to clean Kelsey’s teeth, she thought of a plan. She knew that Dr. Payne was lonely and did not have any friends so she came up with a wonderful plan to get him some friends. (Alana)

Kelsey had many friends.  She knew exactly how to attract people to Dr. Payne that would make them want to be his friend.  She then coaxed him not to do the procedure by making him an offer he could not resist. Kelsey then began to paint him a mental picture of how much happier he would be if he had people to be friends with.  She first told him about all the wonderful friends she has.  Johnny Bills from Never Land and Casey Rolls from across the Bay Way Bridge were her very best friends.  Kelsey saw how interested he was in finding friends like she has.  He was worried about his appearance and became sad at the thought of people being afraid of him.  Kelsey assured him if he would be friendly and clean up a bit that he would find friends easily.  Kelsey took a liking to Dr. Payne and realized that he was not so bad after all.  He was just a misunderstood dentist. (Shelby)
Once Kelsey Pie got home, she told her mommy all about her visit with Dr. Payne. She explained to her mommy how she felt sorry for the dentist because he had no friends and everyone was afraid of him. She then preceeded to tell her mommy her plan for getting Dr. Payne some friends, but she needed her mommy’s help.
The next day, Kelsey Pie and her mommy went to Dr. Payne’s office to pick him up. Dr. Payne was confused as he did not know what was going on. Kelsey’s mommy drove and drove and finally pulled up to The Magical Makeover, which is a salon on the other end of town. “What are we doing at a salon?”, asked Dr. Payne. “We have brought you here to help you clean up a bit.” responded Kelsey Pie. Dr. Payne was shocked that Kelsey Pie would go to such lengths to help him. No one had ever been so nice to Dr. Payne before.
The fairies inside the salon could not believe what they saw when Dr. Payne walked in. The amount of hair and his horrible smell disgusted them. They immediately went to work! Kelsey Pie and her mommy sat and waited.

A couple of hours later, Dr. Payne was finished! His results were unbelievable. Dr. Payne looked like a completely different troll. He was no longer covered in hair nor did his horrible stank follow him. Dr. Payne loved his new look. (Brittany)

Movie Story

I would use the "Movie Story" as a means to to provide a mini photo-documentary to the students and parents at the end of the school year or periodically throughout. I would document some of their projects and activities that were completed in my classroom and could provide this movie to the parents through the classroom blog or classroom portal. I feel that parents would enjoy actually seeing some of what their children are actually doing while in class. As a parent I know that most of what we know about our child's classroom activities comes from feedback we receive from the teacher/student. The video would also serve as a keepsake for the student and a reminder of all of the fun things that they did and possibly even refresh their memory about some of the lessons that were taught. I could also teach my students how to use the software so they could complete video scrapbooks of their own. They could use it to show pictures of their classroom projects or could use it as a means to present information. I am excited that students, parents, and teachers now have this type of technology readily available for use.

Google Sites/Classroom Portal

I have created several websites in the past using other site builders but this was my first time using Google Sites. I was very impressed with how easy and user friendly the builder is. I was able to locate all of the necessary site building tools pretty quickly and with ease. Previous websites I had completed were a little more in-depth in their design and content but Google Sites provides you with more than enough tools to create a visually attractive web-portal for your classroom.
I think most common use for a classroom web portal is to communicate with all of the parents at once. The parents can observe useful information such as classroom rules, due dates for upcoming assignments, web-based classroom resources, as well as learn information about the instructor. The classroom portal also provides the parents with a means of communicate directly with the teacher by using the email/contact options available. I feel as if some parents may be hesitant to voice their concerns or needs face to face with an instructor and this portal provides an alternate contact point for them to communicate.
